Douglas Coupland: Bit Rot

Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art

Briefing

To produce a book of short stories to accompany Douglas Coupland’s first major solo exhibition in Europe. The artist and gallery were keen for the mainly text based book to be an extension of the exhibition and push the design beyond the standard.

Proposta

A strong typographic cover references Bit Rot: the degeneration of digital software over time. Inside a continuous stream of text is interrupted by random changes of font, paper and layout. The design decisions extend/communicate ideas in the content.

Aportació

Our design is a playful and subversive interpretation of the themes of these short stories, extending the ideas of its author, Douglas Coupland.

Producció

The book was a thread-sewn softcover with wide flaps, printed in black on the inside cover and foil-debossed in black to the outer cover. The inside was printed on uncoated Munken stock with a section of gloss paper.
